DEEP DIVE: AIMS & OBJECTIVES

12/3/2024

Picture
For any project-based award entry, it's really important that your project has some clear aims and objectives to show what you wanted to achieve. Your aim should be the overall purpose or direction of your project, while the objectives should be specific and measurable steps towards achieving your aim. Were there any targets attached to your objectives, against which your achievements can be measured? Did your aims and objectives align with your business priorities, to show a cohesive approach to your business planning?

More importantly, your aims and objectives should always be linked to your achievements. No matter how these achievements may be described (Results, Outcomes, Outputs, Impacts or Benefits), they should always link back to your aims and objectives to show that your project has delivered. And hopefully, over delivered! This linking between sections will help provide your entry with a narrative structure. You should always try to tell a coherent story, as this will make the entry more engaging and easier to follow for the judges.

For more deep dives and top tips, please see our Company Page. If you're finding these posts at all helpful, please let us know by reacting or leaving a comment. Maybe there's a specific awards-related topic that you'd like us to cover? It would be good to hear from you!

DEEP DIVE: INNOVATION

18/12/2023

The awards business is highly competitive and it is often a real challenge to make your entry stand out from the crowd. Most awards judges will be looking for compelling evidence of innovation - proof that your business is doing something that other entrants aren't doing! But don't worry if you haven't invented today's equivalent of the Internet, as innovation takes many forms and they all have value.

Of course, the most obvious form of innovation is the launch of a brand new product that doesn't already exist out there in the marketplace. In this case, an award entry should emphasise that this is a 'first mover' and describe how the product is innovative. What was the need for the product and how does it fulfil that need?

Similarly, you may have introduced an innovative service not previously offered by your competitors. In what way is this an industry first? Does it solve a problem or make the customer's life easier? Using 'before and after' data here will show how the service has brought a range of improvements and benefits to the business and its customers.

Sometimes it's not about delivering an industry first, it can simply be enough to have introduced something new into your own business for the first time. For example, has a new tech system or piece of software been implemented to revolutionise the way you do things within the business?

Or it may be more about taking an 'innovative approach' to delivering something. Were there challenges that required you to think creatively in order to overcome them?

If you want to discuss the innovative aspects of your business, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

DEEP DIVE: EVIDENCE

4/9/2023

Welcome to our new series of deep dives into the awards process! The first explores some of the different forms of evidence you can use to strengthen your award entry.

When you write your award entry, it's really important that you back up any claims you've made with good strong evidence. With word counts often quite limiting, we recommend that your main entry should feature top-line information and that more detailed evidence should be inserted into a supporting document. Most awards organisers allow entrants to upload supporting evidence with their entry, but it's always worth checking this in advance. We often insert all supporting information into a single document, to ensure it's all in one place and there's less chance of a piece of evidence going astray.

A mix of quantitative and qualitative data is always desirable for your supporting evidence, to show the positive impacts that any activities or improvements have made on the business and your customers. For example, you can quantify the impacts with tables of data or, even better, you can include graphs, as a visual representation of the data. You can also include any survey results you may have, whether conducted by your own company, or an external organisation. If no such data is available, you can always conduct your own bespoke survey, with questions tailored to provide evidence for your claims.

Third party testimonials and feedback will also add the human touch to your entry. We advise you request testimonials as early as possible, to give people time to pull something together for you. To further illustrate your story, why not include some relevant, good quality imagery? This could include images of a product, event, location, marketing materials, individual or team. With most entries these days being submitted via online form as plain text only, the supporting document gives you the opportunity to add colour to your entry and bring your story to life.

Don't forget to label your supporting document clearly, with the category name and title of the entry, plus insert your company logo, so that the awards team receiving it can match the document to your main entry. Of course, all these additional tasks take even more time, so it may be worth considering enlisting the help of an awards agency like ours, to help you pull everything together. This way, you can feel confident that no elements have been forgotten and your story has been presented in the best way possible.

If you'd like to pick our brains about any aspect of the awards process, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
